Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements from captain Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in multiple interviews following England's defeat in the second Ashes against the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

However, after Crawley made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" comment after his side were beaten in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently went on a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and third Tests.

Prior to this match, he said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special entering this Test."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal on day four was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435.

This means, the home team need just four more wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead with three matches played.

Defeat will extend England's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes series loss.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of cricket – after England losing the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable team. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They entered as the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in the third Test probably answers doubts about his short-term future in the side, Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, extending his poor record versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley said any notion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is noise externally. There's no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," Crawley finished.
