No fewer than thirteen passengers lose their lives and 98 hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” affirmed the head of state.

The official confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another massive rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in national works. They were executed at an accelerated pace, defying forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition urged an prompt pause in the building and running of all similar projects.

This pause was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."

In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been operating in total compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and management of these national undertakings.
